I just returned from yet another overwhelming grocery shopping trip with my three-year-old son. We spent almost 10 minutes in the cereal aisle alone! It seems that the more we know of what is available, the more choices we have, and often, the more difficult it is to make those choices.
It is the same with our children. We agonize over which school, which gym programme, which piano teacher...
With our special children, the choices can be even harder -- speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, sensory integration therapy, behaviour modification therapy, social skills groups... The choices are many, and the stakes are high. What should we do? Are we doing enough? Are we doing too much?
We need information that we trust to help us make educated choices. And we also need to trust our instincts. Our children with hyperlexia are just that -- CHILDREN, first and foremost. Yes, they have hyperlexia, special difficulties and special gifts that need to be addressed, but they have a childhood to live, and we have only this precious time to enjoy their childhood with them.
In the newest addtions to the CHA Homepage (taken from the Spring issue of The Reader) you will find valuable information. The article on Theraplay® offers insight into a therapy that enables us to play with our children while enhancing their social skills. You will read about language therapy in a group setting, and activities that will enhance language development. You will be provided with some effective learning strategies. To prepare for the upcoming meetings for the new school year, we have included an article to help parents in the process of effectively advocating for their children. And, again, we share a delightful personal story and we keep you up to date on how the Canadian Hyperlexia Association is helping parents and professionals help all our special people with hyperlexia.
Enjoy, and happy shopping!
Robin
