Book Review by Janyce Lastman, LL.B.
This book describes itself as an interim report card on Ontario's recent
education reforms, which it characterizes as having "enormous potential"
but "not yet meeting provincial expectations". While not focused
on special education per se, it is an interesting look at where the public
education system has been and is now, where it should head and how to get
there. The Ontario Coalition for Education Reform (OCER) itself advocates
for accountability and outcomes: testing, reporting, standards, cost-benefits
of expenditures etc. Readers should be aware of OCER's mandate, political
goals and biases (which to its credit, it outlines clearly), but given
that caveat, this short report still makes very informative and thought-provoking
material.
