Inclusion: How To
Essential Classroom Strategies, by Gary Bunch, Inclusion Press, 1999

Book Review by Reva Schafer, M. Ed.

This book is an excellent resource and teaching tool for parents and teachers alike.  It respectfully acknowledges the good intentions, knowledge and roles both groups play in the education of children and, at the same time, is realistic in describing the barriers to inclusion without criticising or attributing fault. In a clear and direct manner, the author demonstrates how these barriers may be removed by providing the reader with research-based, educationally-sound, practical guidelines and strategies which enhance opportunities for inclusionary practices within the educational system. Descriptions of school situations graphically illustrate what and how things may be done.

The philosophy of inclusion is clearly and simply stated.  There can be no confusion regarding what inclusion is and how it may be brought into being.

The book is carefully organized to combine theory and practice in such a natural, jargon-free manner that it leads the reader to wonder and question why it should be so difficult to develop this classroom community.

The focus on learning as a social activity, the learning environment as a democratic community, the curriculum as a constant learning process, and the learner as a respected, accepted member of the community with varying learning needs enables and empowers everyone in the educational process to develop and accept the attitude of the inclusion.
