Little Yellow Bus Takes Couple to the Top

by Jim David

A Richmond Hill couple is riding the Little Yellow Bus to international success as the hot new children's act.

Judy and David are burning up the children's music charts with a demo cassette called Jumpin' Up and Down, plus a four-cassette package titled My Little Yellow Bus.

The cassettes are packaged in a wooden bus and shipped hundres of thousands of orders in the United States.

Canadian fans can expect a similar promotion called My Little Red Firetruck.

How hot are Judy and David? Well by the end of the year they could have 500,000 cassettes in the hands of young listeners.

Judy and David play original and classic tunes, always adding their own unique twist.

"I really didn't think you would be allowed to pursue your dream like this," said David, who admitted he's a little taken aback at the duo's rapid rise to fame.

Judy has a different opinion. "I've always had a lot of faith in our project. We knew we had a good thing to offer. It's not going too fast and we can handle the speed. It's exhilarating."

Judy and David are a perfect match on and off the stage. They've known each other five years and been married two. Both have musical backgrounds and played the odd gigs together.

Last fall, Judy and David cut a demo tape at a heavy metal music studio and people started taking notice.

They set up a booth at an industry fair and tongues started wagging. They got three friends to form the All Together Now Band and started doing concerts.

"We couldn't afford to start by working lots of birthday parties and libraries," said David. "We went straight for the big stage."

The-move has paid off.

Their philosophy is to put on a show with great music, audience participation and no preaching.

"There's no secondary agenda to the music," said David. "We really want the kids to have a chance to enjoy the music but I don't think any of our songs are empty of meaning and purpose.

"We need people to sing about environment and literacy, but we also need people to make kids happy. Our philosophy is to be ourselves."

David looks after the business side of the team, while Judy, a music teacher for North York Board of Education, makes sure the songs are note perfect.

"We decided to be our own agents," said David, who worked behind the music scene several years before stepping up to the microphone full time.

"We ultimately decided no one is going to care as much about our success as we are."

Judy has extensive musical training and could have easily taken a career as a classical pianist.

"It's really a match made in heaven," said David.
