WHY HOST A JUDY & DAVID JEWISH CONCERT?
PLEASE read this email we recently received
Dear Judy & David,
Performers, like writers, never know how their music might fly into someone's life and change it forever. Last year, your music brought the joy back into Channukah for our then three-year-old grandson Zev Nachum Landsberg Lewis. It's not too much to say that you actually restored his delight in Jewish family celebrations when his fledgling identity had been badly shaken.
Zev is a sunny-natured little boy with a passion for music, lyrics and dancing. He had already spontaneously memorized the Four Questions and the brachot for Shabbat ---as well as hundreds of folk songs and rock 'n roll --- before his third Channukah. Suddenly, a schoolmate at Zev's nursery began to torment him about being different. Zev came home with disturbing ideas: "I don't want to be Jewish any more, mama. I want to be Canadian." Or this:" "When I was a Christian little boy, Santa used to come to my house too." He was obsessed with Santa Claus and Christmas trees. The prospect of latkes, dreidls and blue and white twinkle lights held no charms any more.
Of course, we were terribly troubled. Then, just before the whole family was to join up for a Costa Rica vacation, our daughter Ilana heard about your Channukah concert. Our "early Channukah" gift to her were tickets for her and her two boys. (Yoav was a year old at the time). All of a sudden, a dazzled Zev saw Jews playing rock 'n roll guitar, singing familiar Jewish words, goofing it up with pizzaz, musicality, wit and show biz sparkle. Within moments, he and Yoav were up on their feet and dancing with delight. By the end of the concert, Christmas was forgotten, Santa was banished to some dusty corner and fir trees were back to being fir trees. It was matzoh balls and dreidls that had the groove!
We can't thank you enough for making Jewish celebration part of pop culture that is so instantly appealing and accessible for youngsters. I just wish you could have seen the boys and their Zayda dancing beside the swimming pool and belting out "Matzoh Ball Rock 'n Roll" beneath the palm trees!
That concert was a magical turning point. We've never heard another anxious word about Christmas. We love you! (Even though tonight's dinner conversation was completely drowned out by continuous, high-decibel, prancing and dancing repeat performances of GoldieRocks!)
Michele Landsberg and Stephen Lewis
Note: Not that it should make a difference, but after receiveing this email we realized who these concerned grandparents were... Michele Landsberg Lewis is a recipient of the Order of Canada and is an internationally celebrated journalist and social activist. Stephen Lewis is a respected broadcaster, politician and diplomat (and is currently serving as UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa). The content of this letter brought tears to our eyes. It really made us feel like we were doing something of real importance in the Jewish world with our music. The fact that it came from two people who are so dedicated to tikun olam honoured us and humbled us beyond words.
